This is the Daehan Hospital building of the Korean Empire period, standing within the grounds of Seoul National University College of Medicine. In 1907 the Korean Empire government, on the emperor's order, had it built directly under the State Council on a hill of Hamchunwon, the outer garden of Changgyeonggung Palace. Designed by a Japanese engineer, construction began in 1907 and was completed in 1908. At first a ward, an autopsy room and a medical school were also built, but today only the main building survives. In 1910 Daehan Hospital was renamed the Government-General Hospital of Joseon, in 1911 it was renamed the affiliated Medical Training Institute, and in 1926 it was incorporated into Gyeongseong Imperial University and became a university hospital. After liberation it became the main building of the hospital of Seoul National University College of Medicine; after a new building was erected in the late 1970s it became an annex, and it is now used as the building of the Medical Research Institute attached to Seoul National University Hospital. The building has two storeys above ground and is symmetrical about the entrance; a carriage porch was built so that vehicles could drive directly up to the door, emphasising the front entrance. The roof of the main building is a hipped roof that appears trapezoidal from the front, and the clock tower rising at its centre is in the Baroque style, showing the full characteristics of a genuine Western-style building. ※ The name was changed from "Daehan Hospital" to "Daehan Hospital, Seoul" (announced 15 October 2012).
