Buncheong Kiln Site, Gochang
고창 분청사기 요지 · 高敞 粉靑砂器 窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a buncheong ware kiln site at Sudong-ri, Gochang-gun, North Jeolla Province, set on a sloping hillside beside a small reservoir atop a hill. Kiln-wall fragments, potting tools and buncheong ware sherds are scattered across the site. The vessels are mainly fragments of bowls, dishes, cups, jars and large bowls. The glaze is greyish-blue, and the clay used to shape the vessels contains many impurities. The decoration features bold designs of lotus flowers, fish and peonies. In particular, some vessels bear the inscribed characters 內贍 (naeseom), which are widely found at buncheong ware kiln sites in the Jeolla region, suggesting that buncheong ware for government use was also produced here. (Naeseom refers to the Naeseomsi, a Joseon-dynasty office responsible for providing wine and food to officials of the second rank and above; "naeseom" appears to be a shorthand for "Naeseomsi.")
