Pasaseong Fortress, Yeoju
여주 파사성 · 驪州 婆娑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a mountain fortress built along the ridge centred on the summit of Pasasan Mountain; it is about 1,800 m in circumference, and its walls remain relatively well preserved. It is said to have been built during the reign of King Pasa of Silla (r. 80–112), and it is said that during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 the monk Uieom gathered monk soldiers and extended the walls. In the late Joseon period, as Namhansanseong Fortress grew in importance, the significance of Pasaseong declined. Today, only the sites of the former east gate and south gate remain. Because part of the fortress wall reaches the bank of the Hangang River, giving an unobstructed view along its course, the fortress is a very effective stronghold for overpowering an approaching enemy. ※ The name was changed from "Pasaseong Fortress" to "Pasaseong Fortress, Yeoju" (announced 28 July 2011).
