The academy honours Ryu Seong-ryong, the chief minister who held the government together through the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, rebuilding fortresses and organising weapons production while the war ran. It began as a Ryu family school and he moved it here in 1572; the shrine came in 1614, and the royal name-plaque not until 1863. Come for Mandaeru. The pavilion is open on all sides, and sitting on its floor the Nakdong river and the cliff opposite arrive already cut into panels by the columns. Korean writing on architecture returns to this view more than any other, and it takes about four seconds to understand why. The buildings sit with their backs to Hwasan and their faces to the water, which is the whole siting decision. It survived the closures of the 1860s as one of forty-seven.
