Ancient Tombs in Bullo-dong, Daegu
대구 불로동 고분군 · 大邱 不老洞 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are several dozen large and small tombs located on the southwestern slope of a hill spanning Bullo-dong and Ipseok-dong in Daegu. The tombs typically measure 15–20 m in diameter and 4–7 m in height. Internally, each has a rectangular stone chamber whose four walls are built of river stones or broken stones and are covered with flat, broad capstones; gravel was then piled on top and covered with earth. Numerous grave goods have been recovered, including gold and gilt-bronze ornaments, iron weapons, and pottery decorated with patterns. The tombs are thought to have been built around the fifth century, during the Three Kingdoms period, and are presumed to be the communal burial ground of an indigenous ruling group that controlled this area. Their hillside location, their interiors built of broken stone in a manner similar to cairn tombs, and their unusually narrow, elongated stone chambers all indicate that the Bullo-dong tombs belong to the tomb tradition of the middle Nakdonggang River region. However, the form and quality of the grave goods resemble those of Silla, which also points to the complex cultural character of the local power in this region.
