Ondalsanseong Fortress, Danyang
단양 온달산성 · 丹陽 溫達山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone mountain fortress encircling the summit area of Seongsan Mountain, which looks out over the Namhangang River. Ondalsanseong Fortress takes its name from the story of General On Dal, son-in-law of King Pyeongwon of Goguryeo (r. 559–590), which has been handed down in this region. It is not known exactly when the fortress was built, but records show that it already existed under the name Seongsanseong in the early Joseon period. It is a small-scale mountain fortress with a circumference of 683 m, its walls neatly built on both the inner and outer faces with stones of similar size. Artefacts from the Three Kingdoms period have been excavated within the fortress, the remains of a well survive, and a trapezoidal drainage outlet lies on the outer face of the wall. The form of the southwestern gate site and the projecting section of the east gate are notable as styles rarely seen in Korea's ancient fortresses. Below the cliffs along the Namhangang River to the northeast of the fortress is a limestone cave called Ondalgul Cave, and legends associated with On Dal are also handed down on the mountain across the river to the north, facing the fortress. As the fortress walls are well preserved, the site is an important resource for studying fortress-building techniques.
