Jeokseong Fortress, Danyang
단양 적성 · 丹陽 赤城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeokseong Fortress is a stone mountain fortress on Seongjaesan Mountain in Danyang. It has a circumference of about 900 m, but most of it has collapsed; in the northeast, part of the inner wall survives where the wall was originally built as a double structure of inner and outer faces. There are breaks in the wall at three points—southwest, south, and southeast—where gates are thought to have stood. To the north, the fortress makes full use of the natural terrain formed by the Namhangang River and steep cliffs. In 1978 the Jeokseong Stele was discovered within the fortress, revealing shifts in the balance of power between Silla and Goguryeo. Besides the stele, fragments of Three Kingdoms-period pottery and roof tiles have also been found, along with Goryeo-period artefacts, suggesting that the fortress served as the town fortress (eupseong) governing the present-day Danyang area until roughly the late Goryeo period. Its construction is extremely solid, and it is considered an important resource for studying Silla fortress-building techniques.
