Archaeological Site in Misa-ri, Hanam
하남 미사리 유적 · 河南 渼沙里 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a prehistoric site at Misa-ri in Gwangju (present-day Hanam). Misa-ri was originally an island in the Hangang River, but it became joined to the mainland when a rowing course was built there. It was discovered in 1962, and in 1980 a joint excavation was carried out by four universities in Seoul, led by Seoul National University. The site currently comprises seven natural strata from the surface downward, divided into an early Three Kingdoms period layer, a Bronze Age layer and a Neolithic layer. In the Bronze Age layer, several pieces of plain pottery, stone axes, stone chisels, stone net sinkers and dwelling sites of the period were identified. The Neolithic layer yielded dwelling sites and everyday tools including comb-pattern pottery, net sinkers, arrowheads and stone axes, as well as charred acorns. Radiocarbon dating placed the Neolithic layer at 5,253 ± 140 years before present. The prehistoric site at Misa-ri, where dwelling sites and everyday tools from each period have been found, is important not only for the study of prehistoric culture in the central region but for the study of Korean prehistoric culture as a whole.
