Ancient Tombs in Bangi-dong, Seoul
서울 방이동 고분군 · 서울 芳荑洞 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are tombs of the early Baekje period (early 4th century to 475) located in the Bangi-dong area of Seoul. Tomb No. 1 has a mound 12 m in diameter and 2.2 m high, and is a corridor-style stone chamber tomb, entered through a passage leading to a burial chamber. It had been looted and no relics remained inside, though three pieces of pottery were later recovered by local residents. Tomb No. 4 is a corridor-style stone chamber tomb with a domed ceiling; excavated from it were a naturally glazed grey-blue stoneware pedestal dish, its lid, other pottery, and ironware. The grey-blue stoneware pedestal dish recovered from Tomb No. 6 has perforations in its stem of a type typical of Silla pottery, raising the possibility that it is in fact a Silla tomb, built after the Han River basin came under Silla control from the 6th century onward. The Bangi-dong tombs were built in the early Baekje period, when the Baekje capital was at Hanseong, and together with the tombs at Garak-dong and Seokchon-dong they provide evidence of the culture of Hanseong-period Baekje. Note: the site's name was changed from 'Baekje Tombs of Bangi-dong' to 'Ancient Tombs in Bangi-dong, Seoul' (announced 28 July 2011).
