This is the tomb of those who died fighting against Japanese forces while defending Namwon Fortress during the Jeongyu War, the second Japanese invasion of Korea, in 1597, the thirtieth year of King Seonjo of Joseon. Believing that their failure to hold Jeolla-do had caused their defeat in the Imjin War, the first Japanese invasion of 1592, the Japanese planned this time to occupy Jeolla-do before marching north. In late July of 1597, a Japanese army of 110,000 attacked Hwangseoksanseong Fortress and Namwon. Namwon was a strategic point linking Jeolla-do and Chungcheong-do, and the state, well aware of its importance, had not neglected its defence. Officials, soldiers and civilians fought together against the Japanese invasion, but Namwon Fortress eventually fell. About ten thousand officials, soldiers and civilians died in this battle. After the Imjin War the remains of those who had died were buried together in a single grave, and in 1612, the fourth year of King Gwanghaegun, Chungnyeolsa Shrine was built to honour eight loyal subjects. The tomb originally stood near Namwon Station, but as it became surrounded by houses it was moved to its present site in 1964. Note: the name was changed from 'Tomb of Ten Thousand Patriots' to 'Tomb of Ten Thousand Patriotic Martyrs, Namwon' (announced 28 July 2011).
