Stimson Hall of Yonsei University, Seoul
서울 연세대학교 스팀슨관 · 서울 延世大學校 스팀슨館

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the first building erected at Yonsei University, a two-storey stone structure begun in 1919 and completed in 1920. Reverend Underwood (Korean name Won Du-u), founder of Yonhi College, the predecessor of Yonsei University, returned to the United States, his home country, to raise funds for a permanent school building, and secured a donation from Charles Stimson, who lived in Los Angeles. Underwood died before the building could be erected, and it was his successor as principal, Avison, who used the donation to build it. Underwood's widow laid the cornerstone, and Miller, then a professor of chemistry, supervised the construction. The designer is unknown, but American architects are said to have come to Korea at the time to prepare the design and the overall plan. The building has a rectangular plan with a gabled roof, in the Gothic style.
