This building of the present-day Yonsei University, formerly Yeonhui College, was known as the Hakgwan, or "academic hall". Construction began in 1921 and the four-storey stone building was completed in 1924; together with Appenzeller Hall, it was the second building erected at the university. It was built with a donation from the elder brother of Dr Underwood (Korean name Won Du-u), the founder of Yeonhui College, in order to commemorate for ever his achievements and character. Professor Won Han-gyeong, the eldest son of Reverend Underwood, laid the cornerstone, and Miller, then a professor of chemistry, supervised the construction. The building is in a Gothic style, rectangular in plan with an entrance at the centre, and has a gable roof shaped, in profile, like the character 人 (person). It was originally used as a lecture building, but is now used as the university's administration building, housing the president's office and other key administrative departments.
