Main Building of Choong Ang High School, Seoul

This stone, two-storey building was designed by Park Dong-jin during the Japanese colonial period. In 1917 Kim Seong-su took over the school, then operating at middle-school level, and intended to name it Baeksan School, symbolising Baekdusan Mountain. Japanese interference forced a change, and the school was instead named Jungang Higher Common School, for which this new building was erected. The plan is shaped like the letter 'H', with the centre of the ground floor used as administrative space and the remaining rooms as classrooms. The original main building burned down in 1934, and this replacement is a historic place of learning that guided national education onto the right path through the dark years of Japanese colonial rule, producing numerous leaders. It is significant as a private school building designed by a Korean architect and built in an early modern style.
