Kim Seong-su, who managed Bosung College, the predecessor of Korea University, began construction in 1933 and completed the main building in 1934 to a design by Bak Dong-jin. It is three storeys high (six storeys at the central tower), built in a symmetrical Gothic style using granite as the main material. The plan is H-shaped, with a spacious hall at the centre. The two stone pillars at the building's entrance are carved with tiger figures symbolising the school's spirit, while the stone pillars at the central rear entrance are carved with mugunghwa, the rose of Sharon and Korea's national flower. At the time of construction, both the interior and exterior were so splendid and grand that the building was without equal among school buildings in Korea.
