Dapdong Cathedral is a brick-built church first constructed in 1897 by Father Hong Yo-seb. Although interior work was carried out on two occasions in 1937, the building has been preserved in relatively its original form. The plan of the cathedral is cross-shaped; red brick is the main material, but granite was used decoratively in important places. There are entrances at the centre and on both sides of the facade, with a rose-shaped window set above the central entrance. A large tower stands at the centre of the building, flanked by sloping roofs that extend like wings, each ending in a small decorative tower, a form common to Korean church buildings of the early twentieth century.
