This cathedral was built on the martyrdom site outside Pungnammun Gate, where Catholic believers had been executed. It is said that the French priest Wi Dol-bak designed and supervised the building, construction of which began in 1914. Built of grey and red brick, the cathedral resembles Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul in outward appearance, and it is ranked among the most beautiful of Korea's early Catholic churches. Combining Byzantine and Romanesque styles, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.
