KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in 1900, the fourth year of the Gwangmu era of Joseon, the building served as the Japanese consulate until 1907. It was subsequently used as the Mokpo prefectural office from 1914, as the Mokpo Municipal Library from 1974, and as the Mokpo Cultural Centre from 1990 to 2009. Located at the foot of Yudalsan Mountain, about 1 km from the coast, it is a two-storey Renaissance-style building built of red brick. The plan is rectangular, with an entrance porch projecting from the centre of the front, a wooden interior floor, and a hipped roof. A marble-decorated fireplace and mirrors used at the time survive in their original form. As a site associated with Japanese colonial aggression, it has value as a place of education offering historical lessons.
