Father Robert had been working in the province since 1886 and used a thatched house on this site as a temporary church from 1897. A Korean-style timber church went up in 1899 and burned the following year. This one replaced it in 1902. Robert designed it and Chinese builders put it up. It was the first Western building in Daegu, and the two spires over the entrance earned it the nickname ppyojokjip — the pointy house — which is still what people call it. The manner is Romanesque with Gothic detail: red brick on a granite base, with the Gothic elements picked out in black brick. It is the only church of the 1900s left in the region, and the fixed point of the walking route through Daegu's modern quarter.
