This was a military garrison of the Joseon period, occupying a strategically important position on the sea route leading to Seoul. The date of its first construction is unknown, but it was incorporated into Ganghwa's defences in 1666, the seventh year of King Hyeonjong. It contains a dondae, a gun platform built on raised, level ground, an artillery battery for firing cannon, and a pasucheong, a guardhouse where the embers needed to fire the cannon were kept and from which the artillerymen were commanded. Because of its strategic importance, the dondae fought against the French fleet during the Byeongin Yangyo (the French Disturbance of 1866) and against the American fleet during the Sinmi Yangyo (the United States Disturbance of 1871). Excavations carried out in 1980 unearthed seven cannonballs and two sangpyeongtongbo coins, and revealed cornerstones and the site of a hearth. The name was changed from Deokpojin to Deokpojin Fort, Gimpo (notified 28 July 2011).
