Naganeupseong Walled Town, Suncheon
순천 낙안읍성 · 順天 樂安邑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFirst built in earth in 1397 against Japanese raiding, and rebuilt in stone from 1424 to a larger plan. The circuit is a rough square, 1,410 metres, with gates east, west and south opening onto the main streets and sections of wall projecting outward so defenders could fire along the face. What makes it different from every other town wall in Korea is that the town is still in it. Thatched houses, lanes, walls and yards remain in use, and the village inside has kept its shape rather than being cleared into a park. It is one of the best-preserved town walls in the country and one of the few that keeps its early Joseon form. It is also the only one where you can understand a town wall as somewhere people lived rather than as a military work — which is what it mostly was.
