This is a historic site associated with Jo Sik, a renowned Confucian scholar of the mid-Joseon period. Although offered many official positions, Jo Sik declined them all and devoted his life to scholarly study and the training of younger students. The sites associated with Jo Sik are divided between two locations: in Sa-ri there are Sancheonjae, a separate shrine, a spirit-path stele (sindobi) and a grave stele, while in Won-ri there are Deokcheon Seowon, a Confucian academy, and Sesimjeong pavilion. Sancheonjae, where Jo Sik cultivated and pursued his scholarship, was built in 1561, the 16th year of King Myeongjong, and repaired in 1818, the 18th year of King Sunjo; it measures two bays across the front and two bays deep. Deokcheon Seowon was built in 1576, the ninth year of King Seonjo; the present building, five bays across the front and two bays deep, was rebuilt in 1926. Sesimjeong was first built in 1582, the 15th year of King Seonjo. The name was changed from "Jo Sik Historic Site" to "Historic Site Related to Jo Sik, Sancheong" by notification on 28 July 2011.
