This is the site of a Unified Silla-period temple in Uncheon-dong, Cheongju. Excavations in 1985 revealed the sites of the main hall, the west corridor, the lecture hall and other auxiliary buildings, and a fragment of a bronze gong inscribed with the name "Heungdeoksa" confirmed that this had indeed been the temple's name. Roof tiles inscribed "the third year of Daizhong" (849) and other relics suggest that the temple was built by the ninth century at the latest and continued to exist until the late Goryeo period. Many owl-tail roof-end ornaments, roof-tile fragments, vessels and bronze objects have been excavated here, and this was the place where Jikji, the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type, was printed.
