Bowonsa Temple Site, Seosan
서산 보원사지 · 瑞山 普願寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a temple site in Bowon Village on Sangwangsan Mountain. Although the exact date of its founding is unclear, it is thought to have been built between the late Unified Silla and early Goryeo periods. However, since a gilt-bronze standing Buddha of the Baekje period has been found here, it is also possible that the temple dates back to Baekje. The stele for the Bosseungtap Stupa of State Preceptor Beopin records that more than 1,000 monks once resided here, suggesting that the temple was very large at the time. Many cultural heritages remain at the site, including the stone water tank (Treasure), the flagpole supports (Treasure), the five-storey stone pagoda (Treasure) and the Bosseungtap Stupa of State Preceptor Beopin (Treasure). Buddhist relics, including the Rock-carved Buddha Triad in Seosan, are densely concentrated nearby, making this an important site for the study of Buddhist history.
