Nabawi Shrine, Iksan
익산 나바위성당 · 益山 나바위聖堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine was built in 1906 to commemorate the landing at Hwangsan Ferry of Father Kim Dae-geon, together with Bishop Ferréol and Father Daveluy, after Kim was ordained a priest in China in 1845, the 11th year of King Heonjong of Joseon. In 1906, Father Vermorel supervised and designed the building, which was constructed by Chinese craftsmen. It was originally a wooden building of five bays across the front and thirteen bays along the side; when it was renovated in 1916, part of it was rebuilt in brick, and it was repaired twice more thereafter. It resembles a two-storey building, with a hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character for "eight" (八), a ceiling finished with wooden boards, and a floor laid with planks. Built following the introduction of Catholicism to Korea, it is notable for combining traditional Korean and Western architectural styles. Monuments to Father Vermorel and Father Kim Dae-geon stand on the site.
