Military Headquarters of East Gyeongsang-do Province, Ulsan
울산 경상좌도병영성 · 蔚山 慶尙左道兵營城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the walled headquarters where the provincial army commander (byeongma jeoldosa) of Gyeongsang Left Province was stationed. Built in 1417, the 17th year of King Taejong of Joseon, it is an oval fortress enclosing a valley by making use of low hills no higher than 45m above sea level. At first it had only basic facilities, including yeojang, low parapets atop the wall behind which soldiers could hide while firing guns or bows. Later, under King Sejong, in order to strengthen national defence, various additional defensive facilities were installed to protect the fortress and reinforce its offensive capability, including an ongseong (a semicircular enceinte shielding the gate), jeokdae (bastions for observing and attacking the enemy) and a moat. According to the Dongguk yeoji seungnam, the fortress at that time had a circumference of 3,723 cheok (about 1.2km) and a height of 12 cheok (about 3.7m), and contained a well, a drainage ditch and storehouses within its walls. As the headquarters fortress of the Gyeongsang Left Province army commander during the Joseon period, it is an important site for the study of Joseon-era fortress construction.
