Sea Area with Sunken Relics near Jukdo Island, Boryeong
보령 죽도 해저유물 매장해역 · 保寧 竹島 海底遺物 埋藏海域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a site on the seabed roughly 1.5km southwest of Jukdo Island where Goryeo celadon lies buried. An underwater archaeological excavation in 1987 recovered many relics, including 32 pieces of inlaid celadon. Celadon retrieved from the site totals around 100 pieces, and it appears that a good many further pieces have been illegally removed. Among them is a piece inscribed with the characters 己巳 (gisa), which greatly assists in dating the celadon; there are two competing theories, dating the gisa year to either 1269 or 1329. It is thought that the celadon was produced at kiln sites in Daegu-myeon, Gangjin County, or Bo-an-myeon, Buan County, both in Jeolla province, and that the ship carrying it by sea was wrecked in this vicinity.
