Goryeo White Porcelain Kiln Site in Seo-ri, Yongin
용인 서리 고려백자 요지 · 龍仁 西里 高麗白磁 窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA Goryeo-period kiln site at the end of a ridge running down from Hambaksan Mountain. Here lies a massive deposit layer, in which the remains of kilns, fragments of white porcelain, celadon and earthenware, and the sites of associated work buildings were investigated. Two types of kiln were identified: brick-built and clay-built. The brick kiln was the first of its kind ever identified in Korea, while the clay kiln was a large structure 83m long, with as many as 27 fireholes confirmed. Most of the excavated relics are vessels, the majority being bowls with a haemuri-gup, a foot rim flared in a shape likened to a sun's halo. The kilns are estimated to have operated from the late 10th century to the early 12th century. The massive deposit layer, the presence of both brick and clay kilns, and fragments of white porcelain in varied shapes make this site invaluable for studying the origin and development of Goryeo white porcelain, and of great value to the study of Korean ceramic history.
