Archaeological Site in Geomdan-ri, Ulju
울주 검단리 유적 · 蔚州 檢丹里 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site was a large Bronze Age settlement located on the slope of a low hill. A moat was dug around the settlement, providing evidence of the defensive concept of villages at the time; it is the first such feature confirmed in Korea. The moat, dug in a V-shaped cross-section, is currently about 300 m long, 50–200 cm wide and 20–150 cm deep, and appears to have originally been deeper and wider. House sites and pit-dwelling remains were identified, and around 400 artefacts were excavated, including various types of earthenware and stone tools, spindle whorls and net weights. The discovery of the moat, which embodies the concept of a defended settlement, together with the various relics, allows insight into the life of the period and makes this a valuable site that has played a major role in the study of the Bronze Age.
