Archaeological Site in Seokjang-ri, Gongju
공주 석장리 유적 · 公州 石莊里 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Paleolithic site on the bank of the Geumgang River, on the route from Gongju to Daejeon. The Paleolithic era refers to the cultural stage in which people used chipped stone as tools and lived by hunting, fishing and gathering plants, spanning from the emergence of humankind up to about 10,000 years ago. A wide range of stone tools were excavated, including choppers, scrapers, hand axes and burins. Charcoal was found in a dwelling site within the Upper Paleolithic layer, and dating of this charcoal showed that the dwelling was about 25,000 to 30,000 years old, confirming that people lived here at that time and probably also in the periods before and after. Pollen analysis also revealed that a variety of plants grew in the area, including pine, fir, magnolia and lily, which greatly helps in understanding the natural environment of the Paleolithic period. This is an important site, the first to reveal that people lived in Korea during the Paleolithic era. Note: the official name was changed from Gongju Seokjang-ri Paleolithic Site to Gongju Seokjang-ri Site (announced 28 July 2011).
