Najueupseong Walled Town
나주읍성 · 羅州邑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a fortress built during the Goryeo period; it was expanded in 1457, the third year of King Sejo of Joseon, and underwent extensive repairs after the Japanese invasions of 1592 (the Imjin War). Built of stacked stone, it had a circumference of 3,126 cheok (about 940 m) and a height of 9 cheok (about 2.7 m), with three cannon towers (poru) projecting from the walls for firing cannon, and reportedly more than 20 wells. There were four gates, located to the east, west, south and north, but all have now disappeared, and only the foundation stones remain at the site of the north gate. At the site of the south gate stands Namgomun, restored in 1993; the two-storey pavilion (nu) measures three kan (bays) across the front and two kan deep, with an ornate roof. Seen from the side, it has a paljak-style hipped-and-gabled roof shaped like the character 八 (meaning "eight"), showing part of the original appearance of Najueupseong. Although only a small portion of the stone foundation at the south gate site remains, it is an important site that should be preserved for its historical value.
