Celadon Kiln Site in Yonggye-ri, Gochang
고창 용계리 청자 요지 · 高敞 龍溪里 靑瓷 窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA yoji, or kiln site, is a place where ceramics, roof tiles, and other vessels were made and fired. This kiln site lies on a hillside behind the Asan Dam in Yonggye-ri, and appears to consist of four mounds of kiln waste together with the remains of surrounding workshop buildings. Between the waste mounds, three overlapping kilns were found, measuring 38m, 31m, and 14m in length respectively, and 1.1–1.2m in width. The kiln walls and ceiling were built up using a mixture of stone and clay. The celadon produced here took a variety of forms, including bowls, dishes, bottles, and cups with stands, decorated with incised cloud, flower, and vine patterns. A roof-tile fragment inscribed 'Taepyeong imsul, second year' (太平壬戌二年, 1022) was found, showing that this is an early Goryeo celadon kiln site centred on the early 11th century. It is the oldest celadon kiln site in the Jeollabuk-do region, and a highly important site illustrating the beginnings of celadon production before celadon kilns moved to the Buan area in the 12th century. The site's name was changed from 'Gochang Yonggye-ri Celadon Kiln Site' to 'Celadon Kiln Site in Yonggye-ri, Gochang' (announced 28 July 2011).
