Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are Baekje-period tombs located halfway up Chilmokjae Hill in Ipjeom-ri, Iksan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. They came to light in 1986, when a high-school student from the village discovered and reported a gilt-bronze cap and other objects while digging for arrowroot vines. An emergency excavation confirmed eight tombs, most of which, apart from Tomb No. 1, were badly damaged. Tomb No. 1 is a stone-chamber tomb with a horizontal entrance passage, consisting of a burial chamber and an entrance corridor. Its ceiling was built up by corbelling the four walls inward and capping the top with four final stone slabs, forming a domed ceiling. The excavated finds include important Baekje relics such as earthenware, ornaments including a gilt-bronze cap, gold earrings and glass beads, horse trappings, and ironware. The relics suggest the tombs were built around the fifth century, and the gilt-bronze cap resembles examples found in Japan, indicating cultural exchange between Baekje and Japan at the time.
