Taebaeksansago National History Archives Site, Bonghwa
봉화 태백산사고지 · 奉化 太白山史庫址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of Taebaeksansago, where the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty were kept, one of the five national history archives of the Joseon period. The Joseon Dynasty built archives at Odaesan, Manisan, Jeoksangsan, Chunchugwan (the state historiography office in the palace) and Taebaeksan, each to store the Annals. The Taebaeksansago site was built in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo, on the recommendation of Ryu Yeong-sun, governor of Gyeongsang Province, and it held the Annals until 1913. During the Japanese colonial period, the Government-General of Korea moved the Annals kept here to Gyeongseong Imperial University. After liberation the Annals were held at the Kyujanggak archive of Seoul National University before being transferred, and they are now kept at the Busan Archives of the National Archives of Korea. The archive buildings burned down before and after liberation and were later buried by landslides; the site was excavated in 1988. The foundations of buildings such as the Sillokgak, Seonwongak, Poswaegak and Geuncheongwan halls remain.
