Geumseongsanseong Fortress, Damyang
담양 금성산성 · 潭陽 金城山城

The fortress was first built during the Three Kingdoms period, then rebuilt in 1409, the ninth year of King Taejong, and repaired in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun, when an inner wall was also added. In 1622, the fourteenth year of King Gwanghaegun, government offices were built inside the inner wall, and in 1653, the fourth year of King Hyojong, the low parapets (yeojang) atop the wall were repaired, giving the fortress its overall present form. The outer wall is 2km long and the inner wall 700m long, both built of stone as a mountain fortress. Many buildings were destroyed by fire during the Donghak Peasant Revolution (1894), and today only the sites of the east, west, south, and north gates remain. In front of the inner wall stands the stele of General Guk Mun-yeong.
