Gyejoksanseong Fortress is a stone-walled hilltop fortress built along the ridge from the summit of Gyejoksan Mountain (420m above sea level) in Jang-dong, Daejeon, in the tumoe-sik style, whose wall follows the natural contour around a single peak. It had long been thought to have been built by Baekje, but excavations in 1998-99 revealed that it was in fact constructed by Silla. The fortress walls stand roughly 7-10m high, with gate sites on the east, west and south sides. Inside the fortress a large well dating to the Three Kingdoms period was found, and building sites within the walls yielded roof-tile fragments from the Goryeo period and porcelain fragments from the Joseon period, showing that the fortress remained in use down to the Joseon period. Excavation showed that the walls were built using the same method as Samnyeonsanseong Fortress (historic site), a Silla fortress in Boeun, and that the oldest pottery unearthed was Silla ware from the mid-to-late 6th century. Among the pottery found in later layers, Baekje-style pieces were few and Silla-style pieces predominated, so that although Baekje occupied the site at one time, investigation concluded that the fortress had been built by Silla. New excavation results indicate that Gyejoksanseong Fortress was built by Silla, though the question is still debated; built by either Silla or Baekje in the mid-to-late 6th century, it reflects the strategic importance the Daejeon region held at the time. Note: the site's designated name was changed from Daedeok Gyejoksanseong Fortress to Gyejoksanseong Fortress, Daejeon, by notice of 28 July 2011.
