Sungangwon Royal Tomb, Namyangju
남양주 순강원 · 南楊州 順康園

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the won — the tomb of a crown prince, crown princess, or a king's birth parent who did not himself or herself reign as monarch — of Lady Inbin of the Kim clan (1555–1613), a royal concubine of King Seonjo, the 14th ruler of Joseon, and the birth mother of the posthumously honoured King Wonjong. The daughter of Kim Han-u, Inbin entered the palace as a royal concubine of King Seonjo in 1573, the sixth year of his reign, and bore him four sons — Uian-gun, Sinseong-gun, Wonjong (later honoured as King Wonjong), and Uichang-gun — and five daughters styled ongju, princesses born of a royal concubine: Jeongsin, Jeonghye, Jeongsuk, Jeongan, and Jeonghwi. She was invested with the title Inbin in 1604, the 37th year of King Seonjo. After her grandson King Injo took the throne through a coup in 1623, a spirit way stele was erected at the entrance to her tomb in 1636, the 14th year of his reign. In 1755, the 31st year of King Yeongjo, in keeping with her status as the birth mother of a king, her shrine was renamed Jeogyeonggung and her tomb was elevated to won status under the name Sungangwon. With this elevation, buildings appropriate to a won — including a jeongjagak (a T-shaped ritual hall) and a stele pavilion — were added. At the tomb itself, the screen stones and stone balustrade usual for a royal tomb were omitted, but the mound was encircled with guardian stones, and stone civil officials, sheep, tigers and horses, a stone lantern, a stone offering table, ornamental stone posts, and a memorial marker were set up. Within the precinct is the joint tomb of Inbin's fourth son, Uichang-gun (1589–1645), and his wife, Lady Heo, Consort of Yangcheon-gun. Note: the Sungangwon Royal Tomb, Namyangju, is closed to the public in order to preserve its original form and prevent damage. Those wishing to visit for academic research or similar purposes may enter only after obtaining prior permission from the management office (031-563-2909).
