Sugirwon is the won of Lady Jeongbin of the Yi clan (1694–1721), a royal concubine of King Yeongjo, the 21st ruler of Joseon, and the birth mother of the posthumously honoured King Jinjong. The daughter of Yi Jun-cheol, Jeongbin entered the palace as a court lady at the age of eight and in 1719, the 45th year of King Sukjong's reign, gave birth to King Yeongjo's eldest son, Crown Prince Hyojang, later honoured as King Jinjong. In 1721, the first year of King Gyeongjong, she was granted the rank of sohun (a junior fifth-rank post within the crown prince's household) and died at the age of twenty-eight. After King Yeongjo took the throne he posthumously invested her with the title Jeongbin. Later, when King Jeongjo ascended the throne and posthumously honoured Crown Prince Hyojang as King Jinjong, her shrine was renamed Yeonhogung, in keeping with her status as the birth mother of a king, and her tomb was named Sugirwon. At the tomb, the screen stones and stone balustrade were omitted, and stone civil officials, a stone lantern, ornamental stone posts, a stone offering table, and a memorial marker were set up. Today the jeongjagak, stele pavilion, and guards' quarters no longer survive, having been lost. Note: the Sugirwon Royal Tomb, Paju, is closed to the public in order to preserve its original form and prevent damage. Those wishing to visit for academic research or similar purposes may enter only after obtaining prior permission from the Western District Management Office of the Joseon Royal Tombs, Seooreung (02-359-0090).
