This is the won — the tomb of a crown prince, a prince's consort, or a king's birth parent who did not himself reign as monarch — of Lady Yubin of the Bak clan (1770-1822), a consort of King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, and the birth mother of King Sunjo, the 23rd king. Lady Yubin was the daughter of Bak Jun-won; she was invested as Royal Consort Yubin in 1787, the 11th year of King Jeongjo, and bore him King Sunjo and Princess Sunseon. When her son Sunjo ascended the throne, she was accorded the honours due to the king's birth mother. After the Korean Empire was proclaimed, it was argued in 1901, the 5th year of the Gwangmu era, that as a consort of Emperor Jeongjo (Seonhwangje) and the birth mother of Emperor Sunjo (Sukhwangje) she deserved special posthumous honour, and she was accordingly elevated in rank to Lady Yubi. Hwigyeongwon was first built in what is now Hwigyeong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, then moved in 1855, the 6th year of King Cheoljong, to a site near present-day Sungangwon Tomb. However, as the site was judged unfavourable by the principles of geomancy, it was moved again in 1863, the 14th year of King Cheoljong, to its present location. The tomb mound omits the folding-screen stone and balustrade stones but is furnished with stone civil officials, stone sheep, stone tigers, stone horses, a stone lantern, a spirit-offering stone and stone pillars. Below the mound stand a jeongjagak (a T-shaped ritual hall), a stele pavilion and a hongsalmun (a red spiked gate). Note: the character 綏 is usually read 'su' or 'yu'; it is rendered here as 'Yu' on the basis of a document of 1823, the 23rd year of King Sunjo, the Message of Condolence for Lady Yubin, which records her title in Hangeul as 'Yubin'. Note: Hwigyeongwon Royal Tomb, Namyangju, is closed to the public in order to preserve its original form and prevent damage. Visitors wishing to view it for academic research or similar purposes may enter after obtaining prior permission from the management office (031-527-7105).
