Seongmyo Royal Tomb, Namyangju
남양주 성묘 · 南楊州 成墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Lady Gongbin of the Kim clan (1553-1577), a consort of King Seonjo, the 14th king of Joseon, and the birth mother of King Gwanghaegun, the 15th king. Lady Gongbin was the daughter of Kim Hui-cheol; she became a consort of King Seonjo and bore Prince Imhae and the future King Gwanghaegun, but died young at the age of twenty-five in 1577, the 10th year of King Seonjo. After he ascended the throne, King Gwanghaegun posthumously honoured his mother as Queen Gongseong, renamed her tomb Seongneung, and enshrined her spirit tablet at Jongmyo Shrine. However, when King Gwanghaegun was deposed in the Injo Restoration of 1623, she was demoted once more to the rank of Royal Consort Gongbin, and her tomb became the present-day Seongmyo. Because its stone furnishings had been remade to royal-tomb standard at the time of her elevation to Seongneung, Seongmyo still retains stone civil and military officials, a stone lantern, a spirit-offering stone, stone sheep, stone tigers, stone horses and balustrade stones. Note: Seongmyo Royal Tomb, Namyangju, is closed to the public in order to preserve its original form and prevent damage. Visitors wishing to view it for academic research or similar purposes may enter after obtaining prior permission from the management office (031-573-8124).
