Seongneung Royal Tomb, Ganghwa
강화 석릉 · 江華 碩陵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of King Huijong of Goryeo (r. 1204-1211). He was the eldest son of King Sinjong; his mother was Queen Dowager Jeongseon of the Kim clan, and his wife was Queen Seongpyeong of the Wang clan. He came to the throne in 1204, and after his attempt to remove Choe Chung-heon failed, he was deposed in the seventh year of his reign (1211) and sent to Gyo-dong, Ganghwa. When he died in 1237 at the age of fifty-seven, in the twenty-fourth year of King Gojong of Goryeo, his body was moved to Nakjin-gung Palace, and in the tenth month he was buried south of Deokjeongsan Mountain; the tomb was named Seongneung. During the reign of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, Jo Bok-yang, the Yusu (regional governor) of Ganghwa, located the tomb and had it rebuilt. Its stone furnishings were later damaged and the mound collapsed, and it was restored to its present form in 1974. Around Seongneung, a number of stone-chamber tombs thought to belong to Goryeo aristocrats have recently been discovered.
