Yangcheongoseong Fortress Site is a temoe-sik fortress, a mountain-top fortress that encircles a hill's summit, built around the upper part of the main ridge running east to west and the branch ridge running north to south, at the top of Gungsan Hill in Gaya-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. Gungsan Hill stands at the point where the Anyangcheon Stream meets the Hangang River, a strategic position on the route to the lower reaches of the Hangang. The northern side of the fortress, facing the Hangang, has a steep slope, while the southern side slopes more gently. This mountain-top fortress encircling the summit is recorded as being about 220 m long, with an area of 29,370 square metres (8,900 pyeong). Records of the fortress survive in old texts such as the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, the Yeojido seo and the Daedongjiji. Traces of the wall remain, including jeoksimseok, the core stones packed in behind the facing stones when the wall was built, together with the facing stones themselves. It is also said that General Gwon Yul stayed at this fortress during the Japanese invasions of 1592-98 before crossing the Hangang River to win a great victory at Haengjusanseong Fortress. Together with Haengjusanseong Fortress (a historic site) and Odusanseong Fortress in Paju (a historic site), this was one of the important installations that have guarded the mouth of the Hangang River since ancient times, and it is of great significance.
