Ingaksa Temple Site, Gunwi

This is a temple site on a riverside sedimentary terrace at the northern foot of Hwasan Mountain, Gunwi-gun. Ingaksa Temple is said to have been founded by Wonhyo during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla. It was greatly renovated during the Goryeo period, and it is widely known as the place where the monk Iryeon stayed for five years from the tenth year of King Chungnyeol's reign (1284), and wrote the Samguk yusa there. The exact date of Ingaksa's founding cannot be confirmed from written records. However, excavations at the site believed to have held the Daeungjeon Hall uncovered the foundations of a building from the Unified Silla period, suggesting that a temple already stood here in the late Silla period. Today, Ingaksa retains a Buddha hall and two other buildings, and its important cultural heritage includes the stupa and stele of State Preceptor Bogak of Ingaksa (a treasure).
