Archaeological Site in Sinchang-dong, Gwangju
광주 신창동 유적 · 光州 新昌洞 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSet on low, flat land along the Yeongsangang River in Sinchang-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, this site preserves marsh and pond remains, pottery kiln sites, drainage facilities and jar coffin tombs from the early Iron Age, together with other traces of ancient farming culture and daily life. Fifty-three jar coffin tombs were found, from which pottery and ironware were excavated. The jar coffin tombs at this site are highly significant, as they show that the lineage of Three Kingdoms-period jar coffin tombs along the Yeongsangang River extends back into prehistoric times. Pottery, wooden and stone artefacts came from the marsh and pond sites; wooden artefacts such as combs, hoes and wooden lids are especially valuable for what they reveal about daily life at the time. Also found were items pointing to an agricultural culture, such as charred rice, rice grains and apricot stones, and the site provided evidence of advanced pottery-making techniques. In the pit-house remains, an oval-shaped hearth was set into the centre of the floor. This site is important for research into the life and culture of the early Iron Age and for tracing the origins of agricultural life, and its wooden artefacts offer a valuable glimpse into how people lived at the time.
