Archaeological Site in Joyang-dong, Sokcho
속초 조양동 유적 · 束草 朝陽洞 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Bronze Age site near Cheongcho Lake on the East Sea coast, comprising the house sites and tombs of people who lived around the eighth century BC. In 1992, seven pit-house sites and two dolmen tombs were investigated. The house sites were formed by digging 40-60 cm into the weathered bedrock subsoil and thinly spreading fine clay over the floor. They were rectangular in plan, elongated east-west, and ranged in size from about 23 to 76 square metres, showing that people of the time lived in pit dwellings of roughly seven to twenty-three pyeong. Many stone tools and pieces of pottery were recovered from the site. In particular, a fan-shaped bronze axe found in one of the dolmens had previously been found only in the Hamgyeongnam-do region; this is the first such find on the East Sea coast of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and it has proved of great value to the study of prehistoric culture in the region.
