Donamseowon Confucian Academy, Nonsan
논산 돈암서원 · 論山 遯巖書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1634 for Kim Jang-saeng, who took Yi I's philosophy and turned it toward ritual — the exacting study of how ceremonies, mourning and family observance should be conducted. In a dynasty that governed through ritual this was not a minor speciality, and Nonsan became its centre. His father had built a study hall here first; Kim added his own, and the academy grew around the pair of them. The royal name-plaque came in 1660, and three more scholars were later enshrined alongside him, including his son. Eungdodang, the lecture hall, is the largest of the nine — fitting for the place where correct form was the subject. Kim's own writings on mourning ritual are kept here. Like eight of its companions it survived the closures of 1871.
