Gangneung-daedohobu Government Office
강릉대도호부 관아 · 江陵大都護府 官衙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of the building where officials sent from the central government stayed when they came to Gangneung, from the Goryeo through the Joseon period. According to Joseon-period records, it was built in 936, the 19th year of King Taejo of Goryeo, and originally comprised 83 kan (bays), but today only the Gaeksa Gate (National Treasure) remains. Gaeksa Gate is one of the very few Goryeo-period buildings still standing, and it bears a wooden plaque reading "Imyeonggwan", written by King Gongmin. An excavation carried out in 1993, ahead of the planned construction of the Gangneung City Hall building, showed that this site holds material important for the study of government-office buildings from the Goryeo through Joseon periods. It is also regarded as significant because the Joseon-period record Imyeongji conveys the importance of this site and the history and culture of the former Gangneung-bu. The name of this heritage site was changed from Gangneung Imyeonggwan Hall to Gangneung-daedohobu Government Office, as announced on 27 November 2014.
