Temple Site in Bomun-dong, Gyeongju
경주 보문동 사지 · 慶州 普門洞 寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Silla-period temple site in Bomun-dong, Gyeongju. It lies in the fields in front of Bomun village, with the Nangsan Mountain area in Gyeongju (a historic site) far to the west and Myeonghwalseong Fortress (a historic site) to the north. The date of its founding is unknown, but it is presumed to have been built before the eleventh year of King Gyeongmun of Silla (871). Most of the temple site is now used as broad paddy fields, but the stonework found there suggests that many buildings once stood here. During the Japanese colonial period, a roof tile inscribed with the characters for 'Bomunsa' was discovered, confirming the temple's name. To the west stand a flagpole support (a treasure) and a stone water basin (a treasure), along with other stone remains such as what was once a pagoda.
