This is the site of a shipyard where vessels were built from the Goryeo period onward. It is especially well known as the place where Admiral Yi Sun-sin built the turtle ships that helped him win the Japanese invasions of 1592. On the map, the shipyard lies at the northernmost point of Gamak Bay, and at its seaward entrance the islands of Gadeokdo and Jangdo act as natural shields. Seen from the open sea it looks like part of the mainland, and even up close it is hard to tell whether the water is sea or a lake, showing how well suited the site was for naval defence. Today many related remains survive here, including the gulgang, a dry dock where turtle ships were built and repaired; the segeomjeong, where swords and spears were sharpened; the seonsochang, the naval command post; the byeongyeong maksa, barracks where naval troops were stationed; the gyeseonju, mooring posts for turtle ships; the pulmutgan, a forge where swords and spears were made; the manghaeru, a watchtower for observing enemy movements; the mangmagimadae, a training ground for horses and naval troops; the gungjangsa, a practice ground for throwing spears and shooting arrows; and stone guardian posts (beoksu) marking areas off limits to the public. There is also the jadanggigeoji, the site where Lady Byeon, the mother of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, once resided.
