Noseongsanseong Fortress, Nonsan
논산 노성산성 · 論山 魯城山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a hilltop-enclosure fortress (a temoe-sik fortress, built by ringing only the summit of a hill with a wall) constructed of stone during the Baekje period. It follows the natural terrain of the mountain almost perfectly, and its eastern, northern and western walls are built of stones cut into square blocks. According to the Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam, a Joseon-period geographical survey, the fortress wall measures 590 m in circumference and 2.4 m in height. On the highest peak is a site believed to have been a commander's command post, and a little further down the eastern wall is a site thought to have been a beacon-fire station where signal fires were lit. Inside the fortress are four wells, still in use today, and fragments of earthenware, roof tiles and other relics continue to be found. Together with Hwangsanseong Fortress in nearby Yeonsan, this fortress formed the final line of confrontation between Baekje and Silla, and it remained a major defensive site in continuous use from the Three Kingdoms period through to the Joseon dynasty.
