Military Headquarters of Jeolla-do Province, Gangjin
강진 전라병영성 · 康津 全羅兵營城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Military Headquarters of Jeolla-do Province was built in 1417, the seventeenth year of King Taejong, by General Ma Cheon-mok, its first commander-in-chief, and for the five hundred years of the Joseon dynasty, until the Gabo Reforms of 1895, the thirty-second year of Emperor Gojong, it served as the army's supreme command, overseeing fifty-three districts and six garrisons across Jeolla-do and Jeju Island. It survived through countless historical events and episodes as living evidence of the Korean people's spirit of resistance, but it was burned down during the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 and was then abolished under the new institutions introduced by the ensuing Gabo Reforms. The fortress wall measures 1,060 m in total length and 3.5 m in height, enclosing an area of 93,139 m². At the time of its designation, the buildings and remains from its days as an army headquarters had already been destroyed, and only part of the fortress wall survived. Since its designation as a historic site in 1997, full-scale restoration work began in 1998, restoring the fortress wall together with the south and east gates.
